You Never Know What is Just Around the Corner!

So, funny story.  It was a gorgeous February day, so Chris and I drove down to Freeport and took the camera.  We spent the day down there and saw tons of neat birds, but nothing really out of the ordinary.  On the way home we spotted an Egret wading in the water not too far off the road and decided it was worth our time.  I pulled in to what looked like an abandoned gravel parking lot and we quickly got the camera gear ready. While getting the camera gear ready, I spotted a juvenile Yellow Crested Night Heron, who was doing a little hunting. We switched our focus to this bird as it looked like it was about to eat a crab. While taking pictures of this bird, Chris and I noticed another couple at the other end of the parking lot with binoculars. We were pretty excited about the Night Heron’s hunting and did not see the man approach us.  He quietly asked us if we had seen the Spoonbills on the other side of the little island we were near.  We said that we had not.  So, we moved our camera gear closer to where the couple was sitting and sure enough, right on the other side of where we had been, nested a large flock of Spoonbills.  If the man had never approached us, we would have missed a really cool opportunity. You never know what is just around the corner!
